7 Best Viewpoints in Medellin We Actually Recommend (From Rooftops to Hikes)
When people think about viewpoints, they often imagine a single lookout or an observation deck somewhere in the city center. Medellin works very differently. Here, views are not rare highlights – they are woven into everyday life, spread across hills, neighborhoods, rooftops, and restaurants. In this Blog we want to share with you the for us best viewpoints in Medellin.
Over the years, we’ve realized that seeing Medellin from above is one of the best ways to understand the city emotionally, not just visually. Each viewpoint offers a slightly different mood, angle, and experience, depending on where you are and how you get there. Some are perfect for a relaxed drink at sunset, others feel like small adventures, and a few have become places we keep returning to with friends and family.
Why Medellin’s Viewpoints Feel Different Than Anywhere Else
In most cities around the world, you experience the skyline from the bottom looking up. Medellin is the opposite. Because the city sits inside a valley and climbs up the surrounding hills, you can look down onto it from almost every direction. It feels a bit like standing on the edge of a natural bowl, with the city spreading out beneath you. For anyone who loves viewpoints, this is a huge advantage – and something only very few cities can offer in such a natural way.
What makes it even more special is that these views aren’t locked behind expensive observation decks or ticketed platforms. Instead, Medellin has dozens of miradores where you can sit down, eat, drink, talk, and simply be present. Many of them are casual restaurants, rooftops, or local spots where the view is part of everyday life. For us, that combination – nature, perspective, food, and local culture shared in a relaxed atmosphere – is exactly why the best viewpoints in Medellin feel so unique and why we never stop enjoying them.
💡Pro tip: All viewpoints above the city can feel surprisingly cold due to the elevation, especially in the evening. We always recommend bringing a light sweater and wearing long pants when visiting hillside miradores – rooftops inside the city usually don’t require it.
Different Types of Viewpoints in Medellin (Easy Rooftops to Short Hikes)
Not all viewpoints in Medellin require the same effort, and that’s part of what we love about them. Some are as easy as taking an elevator and ordering a drink, others mean a short hike or a drive up into the hills. That difference in effort completely changes the experience. Rooftops feel social and relaxed, perfect for conversations, sunsets, and easing into the city. Hilltop miradores, on the other hand, tend to slow you down – they feel quieter, more reflective, and often more connected to nature.
Understanding these differences helps you plan better, but it also helps you enjoy Medellin more deeply. Instead of repeating the same kind of viewpoint again and again, you can mix experiences: an easy rooftop one evening, a hillside mirador the next day. That variety is what keeps the views exciting and makes each perspective feel fresh.

1. La Octava Maravilla – A Local Mirador With a Big View
La Octava Maravilla is no longer a hidden local secret – and honestly, it doesn’t need to be. It has become a must-visit viewpoint for travelers, and for good reason. This traditional Colombian restaurant combines an incredible panoramic view over Medellin with a warm, lively atmosphere that feels uniquely local. You’ll always find good music, artists, or even magicians moving between tables, adding to the experience without ever feeling forced.
For us, it’s one of those places that simply works for everyone. The view stretches across the entire city, the food is comforting and familiar, and the setting feels festive yet relaxed. If you’re visiting Medellin for the first time, this is one of the best viewpoints in Medellin we consider almost essential.
2. Rooftop Marquee Hotel – A Relaxed Rooftop Above the City
Rooftop Marquee Hotel sits right in the heart of Parque Lleras, which makes it incredibly easy to reach. Despite the busy area around it, the rooftop itself feels surprisingly refined and intimate. It’s small but beautifully designed, with a very stylish, modern atmosphere. We especially like coming here around sunset, when the city lights slowly start to take over the skyline.
It’s a fantastic spot for cocktails, whether you’re starting your evening or just want to enjoy Medellin from within the skyline itself. At night, the view becomes even more impressive, surrounded by lights and movement. Fancy without being overwhelming, this is one of our go-to rooftops when we want something elegant and effortless.
3. Cerro de las Tres Cruces – One of Medellin’s Most Popular Hiking Views
Cerro de las Tres Cruces is one of those viewpoints you have to earn, at least a little. The hike isn’t long, but it’s steep enough to make the view feel deserved. From the top, you get a wide, open perspective over the city that feels very different from rooftop views. We like coming here in the morning, when the air is clearer and the city feels calmer. It’s popular for a reason, and it still delivers every time.

4. Mirador El Picacho – One of the Highest Viewpoints Over Medellin
Mirador El Picacho offers one of the highest and most expansive views over Medellin, and it truly feels different from most other viewpoints. From up here, the city stretches far into the distance, and you really understand how vast and layered it is. The experience feels raw and authentic, especially with street food stands and locals gathering around the viewpoint itself. It’s lively, social, and feels very real.
That said, this is one place where we always recommend going by Uber and being mindful of the route. The viewpoint sits above a barrio that isn’t considered safe for tourists to walk through. When taking an Uber, we always ask the driver to approach via the road toward San Félix, rather than driving up through the entire neighborhood. Most local drivers know this and take that route automatically, especially since some of the streets inside the barrio are extremely steep and difficult for cars.
Once you’re at the viewpoint itself, the situation changes completely. The mirador area is busy, full of locals, food stalls, and a very relaxed atmosphere. It feels safe and welcoming, as long as you stay in the viewpoint area and don’t wander down into the surrounding neighborhood. If you follow these simple guidelines, El Picacho offers a truly unique perspective and an experience you won’t find anywhere else in the city.
5. OS Mirador – A Cozy Restaurants with a Unique View
OS Mirador combines a relaxed restaurant setting with a view that feels surprisingly intimate. It’s not a dramatic, postcard-style panorama, but a closer, warmer look at the city. We like it because it feels cozy and unpretentious, especially in the evening. It’s the kind of place where conversation matters more than photos. If you enjoy viewpoints that feel personal rather than spectacular, this one fits perfectly.
6. Envy Rooftop – An Easy Start to Seeing Medellin From Above
Envy Rooftop is often where we suggest people start when they want a first impression from above – but it’s important to know what kind of place it is. This rooftop is very touristy, clearly party-oriented, and unapologetically fancy. There’s a dress code, and it’s not the place for shorts or flip-flops. The atmosphere is lively, social, and energetic, especially around sunset and later in the evening.
It’s definitely not a viewpoint for everyone, and we don’t come here for quiet moments or deep conversations. But as an experience, it can be a lot of fun. If you enjoy a stylish setting, music, cocktails, and a vibrant crowd, Envy offers a striking introduction to Medellin’s rooftop scene and shows the city from right inside its nightlife energy.
7. La Palma Gastropub – The Viewpoint We Bring Friends & Family To
La Palma Gastropub is our personal favorite, and the place we almost always bring friends and family when they visit Medellin. This isn’t a rooftop, but a classic mirador set directly on the hillside, surrounded by nature. You sit right at the edge, looking out over the entire city below, with nothing between you and the view. The feeling is open, calm, and deeply grounding.
In the evening, small campfires are lit, the food is traditional Colombian, and the music stays at a comfortable level that allows real conversations. It’s the perfect place for a slow, beautiful night. We always recommend arriving before sunset to get the best seats and watch the city change colors. After dark, it can get surprisingly fresh, which makes it the perfect moment to order an aguapanela, a warm and very traditional Colombian drink. If there’s one viewpoint that captures the soul of Medellin for us, this is it.

Our Personal Best Viewpoints in Medellin
We genuinely believe that every viewpoint in Medellin has something special to offer. Each one shows a different side of the city, and none of them feel like a bad choice. That said, there are a few places we personally keep coming back to, simply because each of them has a very distinct vibe. For us, those are La Octava Maravilla, La Palma Gastropub, and the mirador in El Picacho.
La Octava Maravilla is the easiest to fit into a short trip or a spontaneous evening – especially if you’re staying in central neighborhoods. La Palma Gastropub and El Picacho usually take a bit more planning and travel time, but they reward you with a deeper sense of perspective and calm. Each of these viewpoints feels different, and that’s exactly why we love them. They don’t compete with each other – they complement each other.
